2020 Twitter Spear Phishing Attack

2020 Twitter Spear Phishing Attack

Oct 17, 2025

Remember when some of the followed accounts on Twitter start tweeting weird crypto stuff in 2020? Turns it was a few high school kids that were good at social engineering.

The twitter hack could have been a truly catastrophic attack. With access to such influential accounts, the hackers could caused some serious harm. Fortunately for us, they were high school kids with a get-rich-quick scheme using cryptocurrency. They allegedly stole a few hundred thousand dollars, but were quickly thwarted.

The bummer of the whole thing was just how easy it was for these kids to gain access. They used spear phishing to get the passwords reset to some employee logins and then used internal Twitter tools to compromise the accounts. These kinds of attacks are literally child's play.

This is why we created Rescue Missions. With Rescue Missions, your keys are stored on your friends devices, and your friends and family are the ones vetting you during an account recovery — it is the most social-engineering resistant scheme we could come up with and is mathematically sound. Convince my wife that you're me or break math… Not likely… 💪

Notable accounts that were compromised: Coinbase, CoinDesk, Binance, Elon Musk, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, MrBeast, Michael Bloomberg, Warren Buffett, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Apple, Uber, and Cash App
